Abstract:

Open publishing practices are acknowledged to be an important means of furthering the Sustainable Development Goals and addressing climate change. Nonetheless, as argued by the authors, the increasing amount of digital objects associated with research and their long-term storage are contributing to the climate impact of digital servers and cloud storage. Such environmental impact will potentially worsen as publishing practices become more open and granular.
